Cuppa with Jess

Who is your hero?

My hero would be Steve Irwin, he has been since I was a little girl. My passion for animals only grew watching him as a child, and he is the reason I am no longer afraid of snakes.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

In a small beachside town, somewhere beautiful.

What was your first job?

My first job was coaching both squash and tennis.

If money was no object, what would you do all day?

I would travel the world, play sport and spend as much time by the beach as possible, while drinking coffee.

What is your favourite book or movie?

I don’t have one favourite book (how do you pick one haha), but I would say the series I probably enjoyed reading the most, and can quote the most, would be the Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Claire.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Do churros count as a meal? I would definitely choose to live on churros.

Aside from necessities, what one thing could you not go a day without?

I could not go a day without music. I listen to music every day whether its while I’m on the train, walking somewhere, or just having a coffee. It is a huge part of my life as is singing.

Do you love or hate rollercoasters?

I am not the biggest fan of rollercoasters, I find they can be scary and I don’t like going upside down.

What three items would you take with you on a deserted island?

A horse, a soccer ball, a piano.

What was your favourite subject in school?

My favourite subject at university currently would be either pharmacology or cardio. I am fascinated by the heart and cardiovascular system, as well as the various nervous systems in our bodies and how different substances have different effects.

Do you collect anything?

When I travel or go to new places, I like to collect key rings as mementos. I have some from different zoos I have visited, various countries I have travelled to, even airports I have had stop overs in.

Who was your favourite teacher? Why?

My favourite teacher would have been my prep and grade 2 teacher Mrs Mac. She was an amazing teacher, and she was the reason I chose to learn French in high school. Every year she would go on holidays to France and would show us all the photos, and that made me decide I wanted to learn French and travel to Paris one day.

Why did you get involved in the production of “Flourishing”?

I love singing and dance, and I have always wanted to be part of a production. So I was very excited to have the opportunity to be involved in flourishing.

Who is your favourite character in the show and why?

My favourite character would have to be Florence Nightingale, because she is a strong and courageous woman who wasn’t afraid to stand up for what she believed in, even if other people did not agree with her.

Florence Nightingale was known as the lady with the lamp because she spent time with her patients and really stepped into their darkness and cared for them. Who is a person who is not a family member who stepped into your life and helped you flourish?

For me it would have to be Hilly, my squash coach who I had in high school. He was a great role model for me, and taught me how to be a strong and powerful athlete. He encouraged me to work hard and never give up and he helped me flourish in my junior squash career.

Vincent van Gogh dreamed of people being deeply moved by his art.

If you had all the talent in the world, what kind of art would you want to be creating?

I would love to be able to write songs, whether it be vibrant and happy songs or deeply moving and emotional songs. I would love to be able to compose music to go with the words, hearing the notes in my head and piecing them together to form a complete song.

Helen Keller once said: “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”

What is your “one thing” you can offer to help a person in a tough place flourish?

I can offer a listening ear, a shoulder to lean on, and be someone to talk to.

What messages, thoughts, and/or feelings would you like the audience to leave with after watching “Flourishing”?

Sometimes all someone needs to hear is “I see you, and I care”.
